Blues Plan Gives Docs Caremark Rx App

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is giving its contracted physicians hand-held electronic prescription software from Caremark Rx. The Blues plan is providing physicians free access to the vendor's PDA-based iScribe software, which offers electronic prescribing and refill functionality along with drug interaction information. It also enables physicians to send prescriptions to pharmacies via a secure Internet connection.

The software can be used on PDAs running the Palm OS. Blues plan physicians must supply their own PDAs, according to the agreement.

The offer is available to all BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee physicians. One hundred eighteen doctors have begun using the software and already have written 66,000 prescriptions, Blues plan executives say.
