Just when we were getting our patients to their blood pressure goals, they moved the bar again! Aargh. As always, the JNC's latest recommendations are far from straightforward. Put them in the palm of your hand with this handy and free quick reference from the folks at Redi-Reference. It's viewable using their free reader application, or iSilo, if you already have it.

St. Mary's Health System Chooses Palm Tungsten C Handhelds for Physicians

Extending the reach of its physicians, Indiana-based St. Mary's Health System recently purchased 130 Palm Tungsten C handhelds. St. Mary's plans to expand that number to more than 200 handhelds by August of this year.

The Tungsten C handheld and MercuryMD's MData Enterprise System provide fast access to patient information, such as lab results, medications, vital signs, EKG reports, and other critical data elements. By accessing real-time patient information at the point of care, rather than manually searching for paper-based charts or records, physicians not only save valuable time, but also improve the quality of care."

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

Don't be too quick to dismiss PDAs with built-in digital cameras as toys. According to this article from the BBC News, camera-equipped handhelds such as Palm's Zire 71, Sony's NX series, and Handspring's forthcoming Treo 600 may actually be useful to physicians despite their relatively low resolution.

ePocrates Goes To Harvard

Harvard Medical School has signed an agreement with ePocrates to provide its medical students with subscriptions to ePocrates Rx Pro, a handheld clinical reference guide.

Harvard Medical School equires all incoming medical students to have a handheld device. John Halamka, MD, chief information officer of Harvard Medical School and two of its affiliated hospitals, said he approached ePocrates as a result of frequent requests for ePocrates Rx Pro from 3rd and 4th year medical students. Dr. Halamka was not surprised by the student demand for help with prescribing. "As a doctor myself, I remember the amount of effort required to master medication dosing. ePocrates provides accurate, up-to-date information about therapeutics, drug/drug interactions and age-related dosing."

ePocrates Rx Pro will be presented to students in "Transition to Clinical Training." This two-day course orients medical students to the realities of clinical practice, including the use of point-of-care information to reduce medication errors. ePocrates information will also be consulted by tutors and students at patients' bedsides and in classroom settings, in discussions about dosing, drug interactions and patient safety.
